Manuscript Consultation

What is a Manuscript Consultation?

A manuscript consultation is when a writer brings a piece of their writing to an experienced writer/editor for feedback on how to improve it—generally with the goal of publication. A consultation usually includes extensive, clear written feedback and a directed one-on-one conversation about the piece. When the writer is clear about their goals and the writer/editor offers equally clear feedback, manuscript consultations can be invaluable for getting a writing project past inevitable creative blocks.

How Much Does it Cost?

For written feedback, I use the rates provided by the Editorial Freelancers Association (EFA) for Developmental Editing: $50/h, with 5 printed pages comprising an hour.

For one-on-one meetings, I use the EFA rates for Coaching: $65/h.

A typical package for a written/verbal consultation for a 20pg short story is $365.

I also love working with longer manuscripts; these packages (including page count and timeline) can be worked out on a case-by-case basis.

Testimonials

Here are what people have said about working with me:

“Sam Allingham always gives the most valuable and helpful feedback. He is not only a knowledgeable and experienced reader, but also an empathetic and effective communicator about how writing works, a quality that is crucial and rare. His support has helped me grow professionally and artistically.”

Alyssa Songsiridej, author of “Little Rabbit,” National Book Foundation 5 under 35 honoree

“As someone new to the editorial process, I found Sam Allingham’s friendly expertise to be incredibly helpful to anyone seeking freelance editing[… ] Prior to the contractual agreement, Sam provided a very clear explanation of the editing process. We set a contract that was very fair and flexible in its timeline. The editing itself was thorough and clearly outlined within the work; changes were easy to find and apply to my corrected draft. Additionally, Sam’s editorial letter spoke clearly to the specific strengths and weaknesses of the work. He also provided thoughtful recommendations on where to take it next. Sam’s work has been a critical asset in developing my writing, and I happily recommend his services as an editor.”
